Near Flood Event on 11th January 2020
On Saturday 11th January, following heavy rain during the week, the water levels in the River Teviot flowing through Hawick rose quickly to critical levels, as the time-lapse video opposite shows.
Flood warnings were issued and the situation was closely monitored by Scottish Borders Council and its agencies. There was a very real risk that the river could have breached current flood defences and burst its banks, leading to the sort of significant and damaging flooding the town has experienced in the past. Members of the Hawick Flood Protection Scheme advanced works team were on hand in Hawick during Saturday, assisting and supporting members of the Hawick Flood Group in the excellent work they do.
Minor flooding was experienced on Mansfield Road. At the Common Haugh, more significant flooding was narrowly averted when the water levels dropped just in time.
Hawick Flood Protection Scheme Project Director, Conor Price, described the event as a “close shave” for the town. He said: “This is a timely reminder of exactly why we are about to start construction work on the Hawick Flood Protection Scheme. The Scheme will provide security and peace of mind for the people of Hawick.”
