Burnfoot Community Consultation

Primary 5 and 7 children from Burnfoot Primary join the Project Team to give their ideas for enhancements to their community.

The Project Team would like to thank all those who attended the Burnfoot Community Consultation on Wednesday 23rd and Thursday 24th February, 2022.

The event was arranged as a drop-in session with the Project Team, representatives from Scottish Borders Council, and the project funders, Sustrans, from 12pm to 8pm to ask the people of Burnfoot for their feedback on how to shape the Active Travel Network in their community.

As part of the Hawick Flood Protection Scheme, new paths for walking, cycling and wheeling will be built throughout Hawick with the main route following the River Teviot. As of 2022, additional funding was provided by Sustrans specifically to make improvements in the Burnfoot area. This may include the likes of extending the paths on Hamilton Road and along the old railway line (Waverly Walk) to Wilson Drive to ensure residents of the area have equal access to the Active Travel Network. Other potential enhancements could include:

·        Providing more storage and parking or cyclists to make it easier to cycle daily;

·        Providing more benches and seating around the community;

·        Working with local artists, history and ideas to make the neighbourhood feel distinctive;

·        Changing how a place feels by adding trees and creative designs;

·        Limiting road space to slow down car movement and give more room to people and cyclists; and

·        Reducing the turning space for cars at corners to allow easier crossing.

The Project Team were delighted with the turn out and the opportunity to engage with the Burnfoot Community on what they would like for their neighbourhood.

What happens next?

All the feedback and suggestions provided by the community have been registered by the team and will help inform a list of possible improvements that you would like to see in Burnfoot. This list will be prioritised to identify what will provide the most benefit to the community.
