In May 2020, Scottish Borders Council appointed McLaughlin & Harvey Ltd as the main works contractor on the £91.87m Hawick Flood Protection Scheme. For information on McLaughlin & Harvey, please go to www.mclh.co.uk.
The flood defences to be installed have a combined length of approximately 6km (3km on each bank of the River Teviot and Slitrig Water), making this one of the largest flood protection schemes ever carried out in the UK. Once complete, around 970 buildings in the town currently under threat of flooding will be protected from 1 in 75 year flood events.
Construction of the main works got underway in July 2020.
