New Victoria Footbridge officially opens

The brand-new Victoria Footbridge in Hawick has officially opened to the public, reconnecting the town either side of the River Teviot at Commercial Road and the Wee Haugh. 

The installation of the 34 metre steel structure is part of the improvements undertaken through the Hawick Flood Protection Scheme working in partnership with the Hawick Active Travel Network, and replaces the old Victoria Footbridge, which was installed in 1991 and removed in March 2021.

The new structure which sits higher and wider than the old bridge was landed into place last year.

A final inspection cleared the footbridge for opening with some final works including the connection of permanent lighting to be undertaken whilst the bridge is operational.

Councillor Jenny Linehan, Executive Member for Environment & Transport at Scottish Borders Council, said: “I am delighted that the new Victoria Footbridge has been officially opened to the public, restoring a key connection across the town between Commercial Road and the Wee Haugh.

“Throughout the process of replacing this footbridge, we have been acutely aware of the impact the temporary loss of this important key connection through the town of Hawick has had on local residents and businesses.

“On behalf of all the flood scheme team I would like to thank the local community for their patience and understanding as we have undertaken this major piece of work.”
