30th December 2022

Live Updates:

30/12/2022

17:00

The River Teviot has now peaked and river levels are starting to drop slowly.

Teviot Road and Mansfield Road have reopened.

Lower Mansfield Road remains closed until the river level drops further and any debris is cleared.

As a precautionary measure, Lawson, Victoria and Mansfield Footbridges will remain closed this evening and will reopen tomorrow. The barriers at Glebe Mill Street will also remain in place overnight so access to Oliver Park via the riverside path will be restricted until tomorrow.

14:25

Scottish Borders Council MACC are continuing to monitor the situation in Hawick. It is predicted that the river will peak at just over bank full at around 3.30pm.

The constructed flood defences and temporary flood defences are in situ across the town and resources remain on the ground to do all they can to assist.

Lawson, Victoria and Mansfield Footbridges will be closed for the next few hours so that flood gates and temporary defences can be joined up.

Vehicles are also now excluded from Teviot Road, Mansfield Road and Lower Mansfield Road to allow resources to assist with bolstering temporary flood defences where required.

The community recycling centre is also closed.

11:35

The River Teviot continues to rise steadily and is predicted to peak at approximately 3pm today.

Resources remain on the ground to manage the temporary flood defences. The red and white flood barriers at Glebe Mill Street have now been joined so there is currently no access to the riverside path leading to Oliver Park.

On reviewing the latest information available, it is not envisioned that any evacuations will be necessary but we would urge residents to remain vigilant.

We will provide an update should the situation change.

08:30

Rainfall and river levels continue to be monitored this morning and the Hawick Flood Protection Team remain on hand to assist if the situation deteriorates.

The amber weather warning from SEPA remains in place until 12noon, with the wider yellow weather warning running until 2pm.

There is currently no change to the previous messages issued.

A further update will be provided later in the morning.

There is no change to the current situation in Hawick. Rainfall and river level predictions will continue to be monitored overnight by Scottish Borders Council MAC (Multi Action Command & Control Centre).

No further updates will be provided by Hawick FPS until Friday morning.

21:44

The Scottish Environmental Protection Agency (SEPA) have issued numerous Yellow, and now Amber, Weather Warnings due to an incoming weather event expected in the Scottish Borders throughout the next 12 hours.

River levels are expected to rapidly rise in the early hours of Friday morning, peaking around midday.

The Project Team are part of the Scottish Borders Council MAC (Multi Action Command & Control Centre), who are actively managing the event throughout the night, and are liaising with the emergency services.

We are currently mobilising the team on the ground to ensure all defences are securely in place. The Scheme has protected all areas of the town where our construction works have removed / compromised previous defence levels. The Project Team have deployed extensive demountable flood protection barriers across the town as well as major temporary 1 ton sand bag barricades where needed across the live areas of the construction. Whilst the Scheme remains in its construction phase, the town is better protected than previously.

Given the predicted severity of the weather event, please take this opportunity to deploy any defence measures you may have to best protect your business / property. We will update the residents as soon as possible once we have more information.
